North Carolina guard chooses Creighton

Late Sunday night Creighton got its first verbal commitment from the 2016 class -- guard Davion Mintz out of Huntersville, N.C. told the staff he wants to be a Jay. Mintz is a 6-foot-4 point guard who played for the Charlotte Nets AAU team. He had postponed a visit to Kansas State to take a look at what the Jays had to offer this weekend.
"I am pumped," Mintz said. "This is a great moment for me. I felt at home this weekend as soon as I got on campus. The players and staff were so hospitable to me and my family and the fans are just amazing. The fans pack 17,000 into that arena and are loyal to the community."

Mintz had scholarship offers from Kansas State, Wichita State, Tulsa and a host of mid-major schools. He had a great showing last week in front of a lot of college coaches and schools like Miami, Georgia Tech and Nebraska also started making a push to land Mintz, who is also prolific in the classroom in addition to his skills on the basketball court -- he has a 4.5 grade point average and had an offer to play basketball at Yale.
"Academics played a big part in my decision to become a Creighton Bluejay," he said. "Creighton has a good academic culture. I met with the academic advisers and the school just offers a lot of support academically."
With Creighton's move to the Big East conference, each night it is facing taller, more athletic guards than it saw in the Missouri Valley Conference. Mintz's 6-foot-4 frame and athletic ability will help the Jays match up better with some of the bigger point guards they are facing.
"I am a point guard who can distribute," he continued. "My goal is to lead this team back to the dance and win and NCAA Tournament championship."
Now that Mintz has the decision on where he is going to college taken care of, he turns his focus to his senior season of basketball.
"I feel so relieved to have this decision made. Now I can go out there and have fun my senior season and focus on winning a championship because I owe that to my teammates and myself."
Creighton has been actively looking to add to its backcourt in 2016, and they're very pleased with how it all turned out. Davion Mintz will be a big addition to the Creighton basketball roster and Creighton community.
