It has been a whirlwind 24 hours for the Creighton men's basketball team as their head coach came from off the radar to become the leading candidate for the Ohio State head coaching job. Late Wednesday night it was reported (first by Jeff Goodman of ESPN) that McDermott had met with OSU athletic director Gene Smith and that Smith had extended an offer.
Speculation ran rampant overnight as to who could possibly replace McDermott if he left Creighton, with former Indiana coach Tom Crean being mentioned by ESPN's Fran Fraschilla. All that speculation came to an abrupt halt when Coach McDermott tweeted the following:
"‪I'm blessed and honored to be the coach at Creighton . . . and am looking forward to many more great years in Omaha! #rolljays"
In his time at Creighton, Coach McDermott has a record of 165-81 while leading the Bluejays transition from the Missouri Valley Conference into the Big East.
McDermott has led Creighton to four NCAA tournaments in his seven seasons as head coach, and the team made a post season tournament in six of his seven seasons at the helm. McDermott's tenure was highlighted by the playing career of his son Doug McDermott who became the all-time leading scorer at Creighton and finished fifth overall on the NCAA all-time leading scorer list. The younger McDermott led Creighton to three straight NCAA tournament appearances and swept the National Player of the Year awards as a senior.
The team struggled after Doug McDermott's graduation but the elder McDermott rebuilt quickly with the helps of multiple transfers and returned to the NCAA tournament just two years after his son left campus.
