Creighton 2021 Recruiting Spotlight: Mason Miller

Mason Miller picked up his first two scholarship offers back in April 2019. Those two schools were Creighton and TCU, the latter being the school where his uncle, Ryan Miller, serves as an assistant coach. Despite the offer from the Bluejays, many Creighton fans thought the chances of Mason ending up in Omaha were slim with his father, former Florida Gators standout and 17-year NBA vet Mike Miller, on Penny Hardaway’s staff at the University of Memphis.

Things took a little change in June, however, when the elder Miller announced he would be leaving the bench at Memphis and taking the head coaching job at Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee, in order to coach his two sons, Mason and Mavrick. Mason is a skilled 6-foot-9 forward who is ranked as the nation’s 64th-best prospect according to Rivals.com.

“My dad has never really had the opportunity to coach me before because he has been busy with his schedule,” Mason told Bluejay Banter. “I am really looking forward to the upcoming season. It will be a lot of fun.”

Creighton assistant coach Alan Huss has been the lead recruiter for Miller as Huss had known Mike Miller before ever recruiting his son. Huss, Greg McDermott and even Director of Performance Jeremy Anderson have been active throughout Miller’s recruitment just in case Mason didn’t end up committing to his father’s school.

“I hear from Creighton a lot,” Miller said. “I probably get a phone call from Coach Huss or Coach McDermott at least every other day. I’ve had a virtual visit with the staff and I recently had a Zoom call with Jeremy Anderson.”

When asked about Creighton’s style of play, the 6-foot-9 sharp-shooting forward said his dad told him he’d be a great fit.

“The staff said I would fit in perfectly with how they play,” Miller said. “It’s kind of funny that me and my dad would watch Creighton play before they even offered me, and my dad would comment on how I would be a good fit in their system.”

Miller shares a lot of the same goals that many of the top high school basketball recruits have.

“The chance to play in the NBA is near the top of the list,” Miller said. “I want to go to school where I have the chance to play as a freshman and at a program that is winning as well.”

Miller doesn’t have an official finalists list, but according to him and most recruiting prognosticators, the list of most likely destinations includes Indiana, Ohio State, TCU, and Virginia Tech to go along with Creighton. So, what is next regarding his recruitment?

“I want to take in-person visits to the schools I am considering before deciding,” Miller said. “I have only been able to visit Ohio State.”

Nobody knows what the future will bring in terms of when recruits will be able to take official visits again, but as things currently sit, it looks more likely that Miller will decide on a college choice in the spring rather than the early signing period in November. Creighton’s staff and fans are hoping the family that opened “Let It Fly” sports bar in Germantown will say “yes” to the program that lives by the same mantra.
